French Lieutenant's Woman

ARTIST'S NOTE:

French Lieutenant's Woman, by John Fowles, is one of my favourite gothic novels. 

At its centre is the lonely beguiling figure of the woman who waits, by the ocean, for her lover to return from a distant war. His return is a forlorn, desperate hope. But still she returns to her vigil day after day.

It's an image that haunts me, and is one I return to again and again in my work - that solitary female figure who waits for who knows what to be given back from the sea.
